Realignment of Georg Forster Programme

The Humboldt Foundation is realigning the Georg Forster Fellowship Programme: Due to budget cuts and changing framework conditions, the programme cannot continue in its current format; a new funding scheme for researchers from developing and emerging countries is being designed.

The Humboldt Foundation has been granting Georg Forster Research Fellowships to exceptionally qualified researchers of all disciplines from developing and emerging countries since 1997; in 2012, it also introduced Georg Forster Research Awards. The programme particularly targets researchers from the least developed countries.

Against the backdrop of changed general conditions and reduced budgets at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Georg Forster Programme cannot be continued in its present form. It is, therefore, currently not possible to submit applications and nominations.

Instead, the Humboldt Foundation is now working together with the BMZ to develop a new fellowship programme for researchers from developing and emerging countries. The aim is to continue offering attractive sponsorship opportunities under the changed conditions and tailor them to the needs of the target groups. At the same time, the Foundation is seeking to draw on additional sources of funding to strengthen its support in the long term.

As soon as the new programme format is clear and applications are possible, we will post the information on social media, our website and in this newsletter.
