Some 360 persons attended the Philipp Schwartz Forum in Berlin on 3 and 4 April at the invitation of the Humboldt Foundation. Experts from the research community, public administration and the political sector discussed academic freedom and the protection of researchers who are at threat in their countries.

In 1985, the ethnologist and anthropologist, Maria Susana Cipolletti, had a Humboldt Fellowship in what was then the Seminar for Ethnology at the University of Bonn. At the time, it was headed by the leading German ethnologist specialising in the countries of the Andes, Udo Oberem. Cipolletti would never have dreamt back then that her research would one day help the Siekopái people of Ecuador to repossess their ancestral lands.
