Go East is a joint initiative of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), and the Ostausschuss der Deutschen Wirtschaft and is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The aim of the initiative is to act as a counterbalance to the imbalance in the academic exchange between the Federal Republic of Gemany and the countries in Central and Eastern Europe by increasing the number of German scholars spending a study and research period in Central and Eastern Europe.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation offers their network of research fellows and award winners in the region as potential hosts and cooperation partners for scholars and students from Germany.

Therefore the programmes of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation only relate to this network.

The Humboldt Foundation offers Return Fellowships for their research fellows returning to a research institution in Central and Eastern Europe after their initial research stay in Germany. The aim of this programme is to strengthen the network and to support future hosts and cooperation partners for German scholars to create their own work groups. Visits by German scholars to Humboldt fellows in the region can be sponsored through travel grants. There is also the possibility of sponsoring long-term cooperations of scholars from Germany with Humboldtians in Central and Eastern Europe through the Research Group Linkage Programme and of Postdoc fellowships for German scholars through the Feodor Lynen Research Programme.
