Since the 1960s the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has established 67 guest houses and international meeting centres for scientists and scholars (IBZ) at 50 universities throughout Germany. They provide accommodation for foreign guest researchers and their families during their research stays in Germany. They offer appropriate apartments and common rooms, individual assistance, cultural events and scientific conferences and thus facilitate contacts to German and foreign colleagues, personal and professional communication as well as the integration into German everyday life. The apartments are rented out by the local university administrations and research institutions.
