The Humboldt-Gesellschaft Japan funds stays in Japan for young researchers from Germany with a fellowship. The Japanese-German Joint Research Fellowship supports two joint projects per year between researchers at German research institutions and members of the Humboldt-Gesellschaft Japan.
The Humboldt-Gesellschaft Japan (HGJ) is the alumni association for Japanese Humboldtians. It is committed to supporting junior researchers in Japan and Germany and to strengthening Japanese-German academic relations.
Project teams in all subject areas may apply for funding
The fellowship is open to academics from all disciplines. Guest researchers who are interested in a stay in Japan should have completed their studies in Germany no more than ten years before the start of the fellowship. The application round at the Humboldt-Gesellschaft Japan runs until March 2021. The amount of funding is 500,000 yen per project.
Application via host in Japan
Interested researchers from Germany must first establish contact with a member of the HGJ who will act as the academic host and supervise the proposed research collaboration in Japan. Only the Japanese hosts may submit applications to the HGJ.

As a starting point for finding Humboldtians in Japan, you can search the Humboldt Network database. The database allows you to filter Humboldtians by country or contact address, thus enabling you to find researchers from various disciplines in Japan.
Award-winning alumni work
In 2011, the HGJ received the Humboldt Alumni Award for its networking initiative “Information on Germany for junior researchers in Japan”, which supports international researcher mobility.
Currently there’s a total of 111 Humboldt Alumni Associations in 75 countries worldwide.
