Communication Lab: Prizes awarded to winners of the first round

The best three works of journalism from the first round of the Communication Lab for Exchange between Research and Media have been awarded €500 each by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the International Journalists’ Programmes organisation.

Sofja Kovalevskaja Awards for 2020 presented

Eight researchers from abroad will each receive up to €1.65 million in prize money to be used to set up their own research groups in Bochum, Giessen, Heidelberg, Leipzig, Mainz, Munich, Oberpfaffenhofen and Tübingen.

Environmental disaster off the coast of Mauritius

In late July, the Japanese freighter Wakashio ran aground on a coral reef off the southeastern coast of the island nation Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Some 1,000 tonnes of oil leaked through a rupture in the hull into the ocean and now endanger the unique ecosystems in the surrounding nature reserves. Hundreds of volunteers tried to lessen the disaster. The tanker eventually broke in two on 16 August. Plans now foresee sinking one part of the wreck off the coast of the island. A controversial decision. Humboldtian Nowsheen Goonoo talks about the disaster that struck her native country without warning and now has the potential to impact her own research work.
