Environmental disaster off the coast of Mauritius

In late July, the Japanese freighter Wakashio ran aground on a coral reef off the southeastern coast of the island nation Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Some 1,000 tonnes of oil leaked through a rupture in the hull into the ocean and now endanger the unique ecosystems in the surrounding nature reserves. Hundreds of volunteers tried to lessen the disaster. The tanker eventually broke in two on 16 August. Plans now foresee sinking one part of the wreck off the coast of the island. A controversial decision. Humboldtian Nowsheen Goonoo talks about the disaster that struck her native country without warning and now has the potential to impact her own research work.
