| Among the material remains of Late Antiquity and the Byzantine period the carved ivories, which are decorated with images in relief, are of exceptional importance. For their according-to-plan depictions usually carry leading ideas. Professor Cutler devoted himself to these "monumental" artifacts. He widened our knowledge and deepended our understanding of theses unique visual sources. A new critical edition of these ivories is most desirable and urgently needed for the research. The Humboldt Award will enable Professor Cutler, through interchange and by cooperative work with German colleagues and students, to bring this research project to completion. |
