Projektbeschreibung der*des Nominierenden
| Professor von Itzstein is involved in the synthesis of carbohydrate derivatives as inhibitors of pathogenic microorganisms. The substances will inhibit the attachment and propagation of infectious viruses, bacteria and protozoa via receptors and enzymes. The main merit of Professor von Itzstein to date is the synthesis of a very potent inhibitor of the enzyme sialidase. This substance enables an effective treatment of influenza. Professor von Itzstein now focuses on the inhibition of trans-sialidases of American and African trypanosomes which cause wide-spread tropical diseases. In this area he is collaborating with Prof. Dr. Joachim Thiem, Hamburg, and Prof. Dr. Roland Schauer, Kiel. |
