Professor Dan Costello, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA has been nominated by Professor Joachim Hagenauer, TUM München for a joint research project which aims to approach the ultimate limit of information transmission the so-called Shannon limit. The awardee has spent two longer and several shorter visits at TU München and is currently teaching an advanced course in TUM`s international program. Professor Costello is one of the leading coding theorists in the world. His book "Error Control Coding" is the most cited research monograph in the field reflecting his more than 250 publications. He has held visiting research positions at the "IBM Forschungslabor Zürich" and at ETH Zürich. He is a Fellow and Past President of the "Information Theory Society" of the "Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)". His research is funded over many years by the "National Science Foundation" and by NASA where he contributed to deep space communications. Since the foundation of information theory 50 years ago the theory and practice of error correcting codes has made dramatic progress. In mobile and satellite communications it is a key element in the transmission chain. In 1993 in a breakthrough decoding product codes has been proposed with iterative ('turbo') decoding. Even though very simple component codes are applied, the 'turbo' coding scheme is able to achieve a performance rather close to Shannon's bound leading to a minimal energy per bit. Professor Costello as well as his host contributed to this new field of error correcting and extended it to other communications areas. Currently some new standards in mobile and radio communications are employing turbo codes
