Professor Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald is one of the world's most distinguished linguists, whose scientific contributions range from cross-linguistic typology to the study of languages of Amazonia and Austronesia, field linguistics, language contact and anthropological linguistics, and are innovative and influential to linguistics world-wide. In her research on evidentials and noun categorization she has developed new approaches to the study of epistemiological systems and conceptualization patterns which she combines with topics in linguistic typology. During her stay in Germany, she intends to focus on linguistic diversity in the tropics.
