Projektbeschreibung der*des Nominierenden

The award to Francis Halzen acknowledges his pioneering role in the field of high energy particle astrophysics, notably his role in initiating the projects AMANDA, the world's largest neutrino telescope at the South Pole, and its successor IceCube. IceCube will eventually cover one cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice and open a new window to the Universe. Francis Halzen will work with groups in DESY and at Humboldt University on multi-messenger astronomy - combining neutrino data with those from gamma and cosmic ray observations. He will also lead studies for a future "hybrid detector" which would combine optical, radio and acoustic detection of neutrinos.
