Projektbeschreibung der*des Nominierenden
Professor Schonberg has made outstanding contributions to the areas of shock physics, hypervelocity impact, and penetration mechanics. The main field of application of his work is that of designing spacecraft protection shields against hypervelocity impacts of space debris, that have helped making manned space missions safer. He has performed various pioneer studies including the merits of using different metallic and non-metallic materials in multi-wall structural systems for earth-orbiting spacecraft, the vibrational motions induced by a perforating orbital debris impact and the effects of existing spacecraft structural loads on impact-induced damage. In Germany, he will investigate the physical and mechanical processes that occur during hypervelocity impacts on structure walls with special focus on energy partitioning into elastic, plastic, fracture, and other dissipative processes. |
