Projektbeschreibung der*des Nominierenden
| Prof Guy G. Stroumsa, Martin Buber Professor for Comparative Religion in the Hebrew University (Jerusalem), is an internationally leading scholar of the religious history of late antiquity. His research focuses on the transformation of late antique religions: Changing conceptions of the self, the discourse about secrecy and concealment, the end of sacrificial religion, the interplay between orality and scripture are some of several aspects of this transformation to which he has devoted seminal studies. Stroumsa´s broadly comparative and interdisciplinary approach which encompasses the religious traditions of Judaism, Christianity, Gnosticism, Manichaeism and early Islam has yielded a number of surprising insights into the dynamics of the extraordinarily fertile religious scene of late antiquity. His research has crucially renewed our perspective on such questions as, e.g., the reasons for the rise of Christianity, or the cultural and intellectual context for the emergence of a new type of religion in late antiquity. Stroumsa has also made fundamental contributions to the study of the historical roots of modern religious studies in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. In Germany he will continue his work on `alien wisdoms´ in Late Antiquity, i.e. the impact of `oriental´ religions on the wider intellectual culture of the Later Roman Empire.
