Projektbeschreibung der*des Nominierenden

Roberto Car is well known internationally for his outstanding research in physics and materials science. He has made important contributions to the theory and understanding of condensed matter, including (bio-)molecules, clusters, nanostructures, solids, and liquids. In particular, he pioneered (in collaboration with Michele Parrinello) the combination of density functional theory with molecular dynamics which has proven to be a powerful method to study atomic-scale dynamics in materials. In Germany, his research focuses on the physics of water and on novel methods to study quantum transport in molecular electronics.
