Projektbeschreibung der*des Nominierenden

Professor Zakon is a leading expert in the fields of neurobiology and behavior especially in the subfield of neuroethology. His early work was on electrical communication in weakly electric fish. Recently he has been working in the field of molecular evolution. The molecular work on ion channels led him to investigate the voltage-gated sodium channels that form the basis for electrical excitability in the nervous systems of all animals. His most recent research focusses on the evolutionary history the voltage-gated sodium channels. During his research stay in Germany, he addresses evolutionary questions concerning structural adaptations for fast synaptic transmission in the auditory system.
