The UK-German Frontiers of Humanities (UKGFOH) Symposia are a series of interdisciplinary, binational conferences jointly conducted by the British Academy (BA) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Funding on the German side is provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The conference brings together about 30 outstanding young researchers from the United Kingdom and Germany working in various disciplines. They share knowledge across disciplines and take the opportunity to work on future UK-German collaborations. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports such collaborative work with its special follow-up programme CONNECT which funds working visits in the partner countries for up to 30 days. The British Academy provides seed funding to facilitate collaborations that are formed directly from the symposium.

Participation is by invitation only.

This year’s symposium invites participants to consider Natures, Cultures, and Communities across different times and contexts in order to explore and address the need for creative interventions in social and environmental crises. It will also discuss how communities in the future, today and in the past have managed (or failed to manage) rapid social and natural upheaval and technological change.

This symposium is part of the Frontiers of Research Programme of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The Foundation regularly convenes bi- and tri-national Frontiers of Research Symposia in cooperation with its partner organisations in Brazil, China, Japan, India, Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
